Book Reading List x February Reads List

How do you know what you don’t know?

Super excited for my little selection of books that I got from my local library. Normally, I like to purchase the books that catch my attention but I’ve been noticing an annoying pattern. I purchase the books, get a surge of excitement of all the potential valuable information & gleefully find a spot on my bookshelf for it. Then once its neatly placed in its new home,  my dopamine rush fades away, I forget all about the shiny new book. I don’t bother with it for months until I randomly linger through my selection of books. I truly hate that habit…

I value taking home borrowed books from the library because I know I have a deadline, so in some ways, I place more urgency on them versus the ones I already own. Granted, if I really love the book I borrowed from the library, I’ll purchase it! I sort of preview the content of the books by borrowing them first through the library because some authors just repeat information from other authors or its irrelevant to me or my personal interest. I’m curious, do you do the same?

With that being said, here are a few that I picked for the month which sound really exciting to read! Some I’ve already read which I’m considering writing a little summary blog post about but let me know what you think of the titles in the comments below!

books-7The FAB Mom by Jill Simonian, I loved this book because of the wittiness and ‘so true’ experiences that occurs to all new mothers. The author explained her points like a real gun slinger by getting straight to the point about taking care of oneself right after birth whilst managing the life of your newborn. I enjoyed how she used celebrity moms as a way to emphasize her points because celebrities are just like us except with a little bit more time lol

books-4

I’m proud to admit that I’m finally getting through this book, Going Beyond Mom by Randi Zinn, and I’ve already taken multiple pages of notes on only the first few chapters. My favorite aspect of this book is that its based on personal accounts but of many thousands of working mothers who’ve shared their experiences while growing a business. This book is invaluable because it shows and proves how many other moms have created their own opportunities for success.

books-6

I mean… need I say more? Your Money Life Your 20s by Peter Dunn the title pretty much sums up the gist of the book and the sole reason as to why I had to put it in my reading pile. The first ever book about personal finance I completed was Nicole Lapins Rich Bitch and it was a ton of fun to read because it was like having your best girl friend giving you great informed first hand account advice about dinero. I’m hoping this one would give me a different perspective on managing personal finances especially since now I’m a married woooman.

books-5

Lets face it, some people are a lot smarter then you, they may have more drive then you and when it comes to multiplying their money, they may have more cash to play around with. So I’m a 100.1% committed to learning more about what that 1% know through The Rules of Death by Richard Templar because some day I’ll like to be proud knowing that I “made it” even though I’m considered a minority.

books-3

When I first saw this book casually sitting on the shelf, I thought to myself “wow, this’ll make me not feel so bad about myself”. The title way over promised and didn’t really delivery what I was expecting. Before opening the book, I was expecting some intensive research and information that’ll help me psychoanalyze my mental state like a professional psychotherapist… but the topics and lessons revolved around sports, mostly from football and coaches of professional sports team. Let just say, I raved about this book to my husband because I didn’t even bother reading it more than half way.

books-2

The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a Fuck by Sarah Knight, since I haven’t had the chance to get my hands on The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fck by Mark Manson I’m praying this one will be just as good!

This is it for now, but by the end of the month I’ll probably have about 10 more books that I may or may not get the chance to read before needing to return them back lol!

Wet n Wild Mega Liner Glam Kat Eyes

#MOTD inspiration!

Yesterday, Americans all across the fifty states celebrated our independence day with a lot of bbq and fireworks. Its the unofficial, official start of summer, which is awesome!

But the heat and humidity makes it unbearable to put on a full face without it literally melting off your face. For the rest of the summer, my strategy is to emphasize the eyes while being subtle and light on my skin so it’ll have enough room to breath. One easy way to create glam look is a sexy cat eye. The first step to getting it done perfectly (even if you’ve got to try a few times) is by finding a pointy tip liquid eyeliner. It will revolutionize the way the wings are applied and wear throughout the day. My personal favorite drugstore liquid liner, that is amazing for your budget and overall quality is the Wet n Wild Megaliner. The Megaliner collection has a variety of liner tips and colors to create the looks your heart desires.

Using the same Wet n Wild Megaliner, you can create the inner corner wings which just emphasizes the shape of your eyes beautifully. Then I used the Mega Eyeliner Pencil to trace my water line because the pencil is not as bold and looks more natural. Lastly, I applied some mascara and then curled them with my a curler so my lashes will stay up for longer. The Maybelline The Colossal Volum’Express is nice… but its not always consistent. Sometimes the mascara comes out clumpy and other times its smooth.

liner9

These are the products I used for my face. As you can see, I just focused on covering my under circles and set it with the Maybelline FIT Me! Powder so it’ll keep my face matte. By keeping the skin smooth and simple, it’ll  make the eyes pop even more.

liner8

liner7

I found these blending sponges at my local bargain store. I enjoyed how they’re all in different shapes and blend smoothly.

liner10

The Neutrogena 3-in-1 Concealer has been my go-to for everything. I found that using a flat shader brush makes the littlest drop of the concealer go a long way, which helps me save on quantitylinerliner4

Thank you so much for checking out my post! I hope this look inspires you to try it out. Whats been your favorite liquid drugstore liner? Let me know in the comments below. Have a blessed day!

Five Month Update x Mommy Thoughts

Now that I’m a mom, I constantly have this internal battle with myself regarding the massive changes with this new lifestyle of motherhood. It sickens me whenever I hear other parents say to those who have no kids that they shouldn’t have any kids period, as if their a curse from God. No bueno! I find myself having to remind my baby’s father about our great gift whenever friends ask us how we’re doing. Like, no, you don’t get to complain unless you were the one bearing the pains of birth!

m3

But I get so confused and upset sometimes because I want to complete my to do list on a daily basis. I’ve got some easy tasks and others that are a pain in the ass, like figuring out how to back up all your electronics (Sheeshh, as tech gets more sophisticated it also seems to be more complicated… or maybe I’m out of touch).

The battle starts with the idea of being constantly present, in the moment with my baby girl. Watching like a hawk for the small details of her development, physical changes and guiding her to understand what’s around her… yet, I have other personal important things to do, goals to accomplish and dreams to fulfill.

Now that I’m a mom, its so ironic to me how I’m more sure and confident about my career and life and what type of action to take… how convenient. It doesn’t help either that I have this constant feeling like theirs a shelf life for my plans and that times being wasting by me choosing to pay attention to my daughters daily activities rather then my own. Then again, I argue, who is she if not the value I place on myself… ultimately, it’s a tug between who’s more important: my daughters development or the future me?…

Maybe its because Isabella’s my first baby that I’m feeling this way, but I haven’t heard many moms talking about this feeling or even express it. I’m literally learning as I go and trying to document it so I can share it with others, but if your a mom and have felt this feeling before, let me know in the comments below! How did you adjust? Did you find a helpful hand from family or did you have to buy it?

Thank you so much for checking out my blog, if you want to check out my socials, they’ll be listed below. Have a blessed day!

Lust’n For Sally LaPointe Pre-Fall 2017

overview

Favorite looks from the collection

The first time Sally LaPointe was brought to my attention was when the fashion and lifestyle influencer, Daniella of @weworewhat, posted up a deliciously elegant metallic motto leather jacket on her Instagram for a little #fashioninspo. As I decided to skim through Sally LePointes Pre-Fall 2017 collection, which hits stores in June, I noticed a range of styles from simple polished silhouettes to sporty with a touch of athleisure without going over board (hello #minimalism lol). Most of her pieces have trims of fox fur from Finland, albeit, I’m pro faux fur but my goodness, does it look so luxurious as it juxtaposes the easy and comfort of a boxy silk cashmere hoodie.

It immediately answered my need and desire for items that look one of a kind with elements of luxuriousness and casualness, finding this balance could be really tricky, especially with the abundance of designers in the fashion industry. As I was reading through an interview the designer did for Fashionista.com, she describes her line as being “Powerfully feminine. Tough and elegant — again kind of that fine line thing.”

Yes, yes, yes & I couldn’t agree more. Here are some of my favorite complete looks from her collection for Pre-Fall 2017 that I’m currently lusting over. Also, some key pieces that I would love to rework with other items for a cool #ootd for a Brooklyn gal. She’s one designer who I’ll be definitely looking towards as a source of  fashion inspiration for the exciting new year ahead because of her unparalleled eye for design and I hope you will too!

Facts && Hacks About Mascara!

Recently, I’ve been wondering if theres a method of picking the right mascara… I don’t believe I’m the only one who’s asked this question before but I’m curious to know if theres a true, straight forward answer to this important beauty question.

I’ve had this longing to learn about this topic for a few weeks and it sparked from a very recent disappointing purchase of one of my all time favorite classic mascaras. One I believed would never let me down when the going got tough but, sadly, the formula felt dry on my lashes. Then, about an hour later, I started to notice mascara flakes around my eyes.

I’ve always been very weary about purchasing items influenced by ads or marketing, simply because, I can’t determine if its just hype or the real thing. Our eyes are one of the most sensitive parts our outer skin, therefore I strongly believe that what ever we decide to place on them should feel like an investment into the greater good of the health of our eyes. Below I’ve listed a few mascara insights from varies sources, so here we go:

1. Familiarity

The best way to make a better or rather more informed purchase without running the risk of losing money is by becoming intimately acquainted with your lash type. Not all things work for every person and you can thank your DNA for that!

If your curious to know what might your lash type be, here are four of the most common lashes;mascara-lash-types

Follow the link below for specific tips about each of these lash types; http://www.eonline.com/news/632094/tricks-to-lengthen-short-sparse-or-straight-eyelash-types

2. Different wands for unique results!

a1fd6388337957ab881504397e1c46d2

  • Small wands are typically better for small eyelashes because the bristles can grab each lash with more control and touch up corners easily.
  • Long, comb like bristles that are evenly spaced are often used for separating, defining and lengthen lashes, but it doesn’t do much to add volume.
  • For maximum volume, many wands are large and round with densely packed bristles that grab and coat each lash.
  • If you want a more precise application, its best to use a wand with bristles that have different lengths so it’ll grab each lash individually.
  • Rubber wands with moderately spaced bristles are perfect for a more natural look!

3. Formula & Texture

According to Cindy Lin, Albea’s Director of Product Development, Beauty Solutions in NYC, mascara formulas haven’t changed much the past 50 years. They’re  basically a combination of;

  • Wax: which is best known for its volume, separating, and blackest black capabilities. Hard waxes — found in low-quality and expired mascaras — can stiffen your lashes and cause breakage.
  • Pigments: the most recent innovation was made in 2004 when the FDA approved a carbon-black pigment, which gives users the darkest, blackest lashes possible
  • Film Formers: film-forming agents are groups of chemicals that leave a pliable, cohesive and continuous covering over the hair or the skin when applied to their surface

ingredients

Most mascaras you’ll see in stores are oil-and-wax-based, which are the easiest to find because their the most traditional. “When it comes to formula claims, if you see “contains vitamin this, vitamin that,” argan oil, botanical extracts, etc., it’s usually just promotional and at low percentages—the bulk of the formula is still the basic wax-pigment combo,” says Cindy Lin.

4. Mastering Layers

Makeup artist often use the art of layering to make mascara last longer while also making it easier to remove at the end of the day. The trick is to use a waterproof mascara on top of your regular formula. You’ll first need to apply your normal mascara and then finish it with a single coat of a waterproof formula. The convenience of waterproof mascaras (besides the very obvious) is that it holds curled lashes beautifully and keeps mascara from smearing throughout the day. But because it’s so difficult to remove, another trick is to put on one coat of a regular mascara and then a clear coat afterwards so it’ll create the same long lasting effect!

5. Innovation is NOT easy

Launching  a breakthrough mascara formula isn’t easy. A beauty necessity like mascara can take years to produce because of the different channels of research & development, testing, FDA approvals, patents, etc. It’s actually easier and cheaper for companies to create a breakthrough brush and patent that, then creating a new breakthrough formula. The combined effort of three important components working together is what creates the magic: the brush, the wiper (this part is found at the tip of the tube and controls how much formula is left on the wand), and the formula.

When I jumped into the research, I was expecting to find a straight, cut throat answer with a bit of digging to validate the statements. All the articles I read answered one question but then it would lead me to another question. The conclusions a bit bitter sweet one because there’s no clear answer to towards buying decisions. Like mascaras, it’s a combination of what you’ll like and what would work best. It’s back to trial & error and just in time for the holiday season!

It’s that time of year again where all the top fashion editors, influencers and elite are preparing themselves for the crazy schedule that’ll be Fashion week. The month long journey of the Spring 2017 collections beginning in New York City and traveling through the major fashion capitals of the world like; London, Paris & Milan.

Albeit the media will be all over what the runway shows will display for next season, currently I’m more interesting in what colors and hues and shades will emerge this Fall season until next year. Almost all summer I was wearing blacks or greys and now that the fall is here, undoubtedly, black will be one of the dominant colors throughout many new yorker’s closets and theres no better time then the change of a season.

Pantone, the authorities on color that provide color systems and leading technology for accurate communication of colors for a wide range of industries including the fashion, has available a list of colors that’ll be dominant throughout Fall 2016.

4th Of July 2016 x RECAP

2

Bless the 3 day weekends! lol My 4th of July was spend with a lot of family quality time along with great cooking, smokey bbq, some fireworks but sadly a lot of rain towards the end. Countless number of people around the neighborhood were lighting their own firework rockets. The #ootd for the nations celebration of independence was something airy & comfortable, just to feel the slight breeze that managed to travel through even with the hot sun steaming.

A funny moment that occurred during the middle of our 4th of July bbq was when we almost lost our pet rabbit.

(Found this beauty in a local thrift shop..)

Most of my family attended the bbq & when I mean everyone, I’m also talking about our house pets, Chocolate the rabbit and Dardy our Shiht Zhu. Our rabbit is a short eared, solid black, mini rabbit. She’s always kept indoors but my father decided to give her a vacation by bringing her to the grassy areas of the backyard where we were having the bbq. When we looked at her, she seemed like she was in nirvana as the the sun was shinning on her. But for her protection, we kept the top of her cage on her so they’ll be no risk of losing her.

Without realizing, the door to Chocolates cage opened because my youngest brother had fallen on top of it! No one noticed that her cage popped open and when my dad went to check up on her, she was GONE! We were frantically looking for her all over the the backyard and we were worried that she had wondered off into our neighbors yard or worst, that the local owl took her for dinner! 😱

Eventually (20 minutes later) we found her grazing the grass under the family car. Leisurely, hopping from one patch to another. We all started laughing at the coincide that  at all of times we could have lost Chocolate, imagine it being on the 4th of July of 2016!

Metallic Foil Stripe x Nails Update

Before I decided to try this design, I wasn’t aware that the stripes are called nail foil and if your looking for the ultra thin ones, just add stripe to the end of that google search. Their not expensive but before I purchased it, I decided to experiment with supplies I already had available at home. To improvise, I used aluminum foil to cut into really thin stripes and for glue, I depended on the polish to get a little dry and tacky. The tackiness made it like glue which made the foil stripes stick with only a few layers of coating. Then lastly, sealed with a clear top coat…

These are the finished results! Enjoy and let me know what you think of this design!

Cynthia Rowley x Summer Swimsuits

swimsuit-desire.jpg

As a little girl, one piece swimsuits were the staple to my wardrobe during the summer session. They ranged from tropical floral prints to bold salmon colors and ruffles along the waist. For the summer season, RTW Cynthia Rowley blends the functionality of a sporty wetsuit with a cute bikini bottom for the inner surfer gal in everyone. Her passion for designing the wetsuits comes from her own love of surfing. These are just a few that I picked out from her website that look so delicious! The neoprene helps maintain the shape, which is an awesome characteristic of neoprene. Rowleys buy now wetsuit capsule collection comes in ten different patterned fabrics from color blocking to florals to minimals! The effortlessness of style selections within the varying looks are killer!

Now, if I only find a Australian like beach in NYC…

90’s Paint Splatter: Nails Update

IMAG3815-01

IMAG3820-01

boulders_jawbreakers_1

Did you notice? maybe? That the middle of the 2010’s brought out everyones inner 90s kid. Suddenly 90s throwbacks were blissful reminders of the simpler moments during our youth. People expressed their homage to that decade through their fashion and beauty choices. If this decades version of the 90’s sticks around for the remaining of the of 2010’s, only time will tell, but it’ll be a hell of an interesting sight to see how the styles evolve and grow with the different tastes. Heres my ode to 90’s trend, a jawbreaker paint splatter style nails. Using some warm water, hair spray, olive oil cooking spray, and a piece of plastic, I managed to get the style down but it took some patience.

Enjoy!
